Licensure Guide & Compact States
For physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs), compact states simplify the process of working across state lines. If you hold a current, valid license in your home state and meet all eligibility requirements, you can apply for a compact privilege to practice in other member states without going through a full licensure process. Keep in mind: a compact privilege must be obtained for each individual state where you plan to work.
Occupational Therapy and Speech-Language Pathology use a “compact privilege,” which is equivalent to a license. This privilege grants Occupational Therapists (OTs), Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTAs), and Speech-Language Pathologists who are in good standing in a compact member state eligibility to practice in another compact member state.
To help guide you, we’ve pulled together a dedicated resource page with everything you need to navigate licensure and compact requirements.
